@jenna - love the direction you are going in! an interesting reference to look at might be how courtyards have been used as gendered spaces in other cultures, for example, in pre-colonial Algeria, the courtyard and terrace was explicitly a space for women to do domestic work in a culture where they could not claim public space

May an object also be a surface? A mural? Maybe a doorbell, but also gravel surface that announces arrival in a softer, less jarring way?
