Updating Your FAFSA: Professional Judgment
We’re looking forward to you joining The New School community this fall. As you and your family continue to plan for financing your education, we wanted to make you aware of something called professional judgment. Students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) receive an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) based on your family’s ability to contribute to your cost of education. Sometimes, unusual or unexpected situations or circumstances arise that impact a student’s federal student aid eligibility. In such cases, federal regulations give financial aid administrators the ability to make adjustments to FAFSA data to present a more accurate assessment of your EFC. This is known as professional judgment. If your family’s financial situation has changed significantly from what is reflected on your federal income tax return - recent unemployment of a family member or significant drop in income - you may be eligible to have your financial aid adjusted. To learn more, join us for our upcoming webinar Updating Your FAFSA: Professional Judgment on Wednesday, June 23 at 7:00 p.m. ET. If your family’s financial situation has not significantly changed and/or you have an EFC of $0, you are likely ineligible for professional judgment and this webinar will not be of relevance to you. You can find your EFC in your Student Aid Report (SAR). As always, if you have questions about federal student aid, external sources of funding, or any aspects of educational financial planning, the Office of Financial Aid is here to help.

We look forward to connecting with you soon!
